The Strange Tree

There’s a strange tree which lives near me,

And this strange tree could not agree,

That if this tree could ever see,

A stranger tree it sure would be.

There’s a strange tree which topples me,

For this strange tree was tall, you see,

And then this tree would use its knee,

To break in three, the clouds who flee.

There’s a strange tree which lives near me,

The northern tree, its branches free,

The southern tree, no limb to see,

For this strange tree, was strange, you see?

There’s a strange tree which I can see,

And this strange tree (against my plea)

Was sent to sea, its roots now free,

And now this tree… A ship is he.

Willow and Gingko By Eve Merriam

The willow is like an etching,

Fine-lined against the sky.

Then ginkgo is like a crude sketch,

Hardly worthy to be signed.

The willow’s music is like a soprano,

Delicate and thin.

The ginkgo’s tune is like a chorus

With everyone joining in.

The willow is sleek as a velvet-nosed calf,

The ginkgo is leathery as an old bull.

The willow’s branches are like silken thread;

The ginkgo’s like stubby rough wool.

The willow is like a nymph with streaming hair;

Wherever it grows, there is green and gold and fair.

The willow dips to the water,

Protected and precious, like the king’s favorite daughter.

The ginkgo forces its way through gray concrete;

Like a city child, it grows up in the street.

Thrust against the metal sky,

Somehow it survives and even thrives.

My eyes feast upon the willow,

But my heart goes to the ginkgo.

Windflowers——

Windflowers,windflowers

my father told me not to go

near them

He said he feared them always

and he told me that they

carried him away

Windflowers,beartiful

windflowers

I couldn’t wait to touch them

to smell them I held them

closely

And now I cannot break away

Their sweet bouquet disappears

like the vapor in the desert

So take a warning ,son

Windflowers ,ancient

windflowers

their beauty capture every

young dreamer

who lingers near them

But ancient windflowers,

I love you

致橡树To the Oak Tree 作者:舒婷By Shu Ting 我如果爱你—— If I love you — 绝不像攀援的凌霄花 I will never be a clinging trumpet creeper Using your high boughs to show off my height 我如果爱你—— If I love you — 绝不学痴情的鸟儿 I will never be a spoony bird Repeating a monotonous song for green shade 也不止像泉源 Or be a spring 常年送来清凉的慰藉 Bringing cool solace all year long 也不止像险峰 Or be a steep peak Increasing your stature, reflecting your eminence 甚至日光 Even the sunlight 甚至春雨 Even the spring rain 不,这些都还不够 No, all these are not enough I must be a ceiba tree beside you Be the image of a tree standing together with you 根,紧握在地下 Our roots, entwined underground 叶,相触在云里 Our leaves, touching in the clouds With each gust of wind 我们都互相致意 We greet each other 但没有人 But nobody 听懂我们的言语 Can understand our words 你有你的铜枝铁干 You’ll have your copper branches and iron trunk Like knives, like swords, like halberds, too 我有我的红硕花朵 I’ll have my crimson flowers 像沉重的叹息 Like heavy sighs 又像英勇的火炬 And valiant torches 我们分担寒潮、风雷、霹雳 We’ll share cold spells, storms and thunder We’ll share mists, hazes and rainbows 仿佛永远分离 Seemingly always apart 却又终身相依 But also forever interdependent 这才是伟大的爱情 Only this can be great love 坚贞就在这里 The loyalty is here 爱—— Love — 不仅爱你伟岸的身躯 I love not only your strapping stature But also your firm stand, the earth beneath you

A tree has three main parts, the roots, the branches and the leaves. Under the ground, the roots spread out so that the tree can stand firm. Above the ground, the roots form the trunk, and the trunk supports the branches. Near the top of the tree, the trunk divides into branches. At the top of the tree, the leaves grow out of the branches. The leaves receive sunlight to help the whole tree grow.

To the Oak If I love you – I’ll never be a clinging campsis flower Resplendent in borrowed glory on your high boughs; If I love you — I’ll never mimic the silly infatuated birds Repeating the same monotonous song for green shade; Or be like a spring Offering cool comfort all year long; Or a lofty peak Enhancing your stature, your eminence。

Even the sunlight, Even spring rain, None of the these suffice! I must be a kapok, the image of A tree standing together with you; Our roots closely intertwined beneath the earth, Our leaves touching in the clouds。 With every whiff of wind We greet each other But no one can Understand our words。

You’ll have bronze limbs and iron trunk, Like knives, swords And halberds。 I’ll have my crimson flowers Like sighs, heavy and deep, Like heroic torches, Together we’ll share The cold tidal waves, storms, and thunderbolts; Together we’ll share The light mist, the colored rainbows; We shall always depend on each other。

Only this can be called great love。 Wherein lies the faith, true and deep。

I love not only your stateliness But also your firm stand, the earth beneath you。
